Complete rules for board games and card games kids actually love.
Age guide: Ages 3-5 do best with pure luck games (Candy Land, Hi Ho Cherry-O) where no reading or strategy is required. Ages 6-8 can handle simple strategy (Connect Four, Go Fish). Ages 8+ can play most adult-lite games (Clue, Codenames Pictures, Ticket to Ride).

Candy Land and Hi Ho Cherry-O are perfect for ages 3-5. They require no reading and no strategy — just following the board. Chutes and Ladders also works well. By age 5, Connect Four and simple card games like Go Fish are great additions.
Go Fish, War, Old Maid (with a Joker), Snap, and Crazy Eights all work with a standard 52-card deck. These are some of the best ways to teach kids basic card game concepts before moving to specialized game cards.
Clue recommends ages 8+. Most kids in second grade can understand the deduction mechanic (you eliminated it, so it must be the remaining one). Younger kids (6-7) can participate with some coaching.
Connect Four is the best first strategy game for ages 6-8. It has clear visual feedback (see your line growing), simple rules, and teaches planning ahead. Blokus is the next step up for ages 7-10.
Choose cooperative games (everyone wins or loses together) to reduce frustration from losing. Pandemic and Forbidden Island are great for 8+. For younger kids, reduce game complexity by playing fewer rounds or simplifying scoring.
