1 Overview
Ten-pin bowling is a precision sport in which players roll a heavy ball down a 60-foot lane to knock down 10 pins arranged in a triangular formation. Each player bowls 10 frames per game. Strikes (all 10 pins on the first ball) and spares (all remaining pins on the second ball) earn bonus points. A perfect game -- 12 consecutive strikes -- scores 300 points. Bowling is one of the most widely participated sports in the United States, with over 70 million people bowling each year.
2 Setup and Equipment
- 10 pins arranged in a triangle at the end of the lane (4-3-2-1 formation)
- Bowling ball (6 to 16 pounds depending on player)
- Bowling shoes (required at all lanes)
- 60-foot lane with gutters on each side
Pin spacing: 12 inches center-to-center. The head pin (pin 1) sits at the apex facing the bowler.
3 Gameplay
- Each game consists of 10 frames. Each player bowls all 10 frames before the next player's turn, or players alternate each frame (varies by preference).
- In frames 1 to 9: each player gets up to 2 balls per frame to knock down all 10 pins.
- In frame 10: if a player rolls a strike on their first ball, they get 2 more balls (3 total). If they roll a spare with their first two balls, they get 1 more ball (3 total). If they get neither a strike nor spare, they get only 2 balls.
4 Scoring: Strikes, Spares, and Frames
Bowling uses a cumulative scoring system where strikes and spares earn bonus points based on subsequent rolls.
| Result | Symbol | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Strike (all 10 on first ball) | X | 10 + next 2 balls |
| Spare (all 10 on two balls) | / | 10 + next 1 ball |
| Open frame (not all 10) | Number | Pins knocked down |
| Gutter ball | - | 0 |
Scoring Example
Frame 1: Strike (X). Frame 2: 7 pins, then spare (/). Frame 3: 4 pins first ball.
- Frame 1 score: 10 (strike) + 7 + 3 (next 2 balls) = 20. Running total: 20.
- Frame 2 score: 10 (spare) + 4 (next 1 ball) = 14. Running total: 34.
- Frame 3 score: 4 (open). Running total: 38.
5 The Perfect Game
A perfect game is 12 consecutive strikes (one in each of the 10 frames, plus 2 bonus balls in the 10th frame). Every frame scores 30 points (10 + next 2 balls, both strikes = 30). Total: 300 points.
A score of 300 is the gold standard in bowling. At the recreational level, breaking 200 is considered excellent play. The national average for league bowlers is around 170.
6 Bowling Technique
Approach
Most bowlers use a 4 or 5 step approach. Start with the ball at chest height, step forward, swing the ball back on the second step, bring it forward on the third/fourth, and release at the bottom of the swing on the final step as your sliding foot reaches the foul line.
Release
The two primary release styles:
- Straight ball: Release the ball with your thumb pointing up (12 o'clock). Ball rolls straight, good for beginners and spare shooting.
- Hook ball: Release with your thumb at 10 o'clock and your fingers rotating from 4 to 2 o'clock at release. Ball curves from right to left (for right-handers), entering the pocket at the ideal 1-3 pin angle.
The Pocket
The ideal strike target is the "pocket" -- between pins 1 (head pin) and 3 for right-handers (1-2 for left-handers). Hitting the pocket at the correct angle gives the highest probability of a strike.
7 Variants
- Bumper bowling: Inflatable or metal bumpers cover the gutters. Used for young children or casual parties.
- Candlepin bowling: Thin pins, smaller balls, no pin clearing between balls in a frame. Popular in New England.
- Duckpin bowling: Shorter, squat pins and smaller balls. Players get 3 balls per frame. Common in the Mid-Atlantic US.
- 5-pin bowling: Five pins in a V pattern, smaller ball, no finger holes. The dominant form in Canada.
