1 Overview
Beer pong is a drinking game in which players throw ping-pong balls across a table into cups of beer. Two teams of one or two players face off, each with 10 cups arranged in a triangle at their end of the table. When a ball lands in a cup, the defending team drinks it and removes it. First team to eliminate all 10 opposing cups wins.
Beer pong is the most widely played party drinking game in the United States. Rules vary enormously by region and house -- agreeing on house rules before starting is essential.
Drink responsibly. Know your limits.
2 Setup
- Table: Standard 8-foot folding table. Longer tables (10 ft) are used in tournaments.
- Cups: 20 cups total (10 per team). Standard Solo cups filled roughly 1/3 with beer (about 4-5 oz each).
- Formation: 10-cup triangle: 4 cups in the back row, 3 in the next, 2, then 1 at the front (pointing toward opponents).
- Balls: 2 ping-pong balls.
- Water cup: One cup of water per side for rinsing balls between throws.
3 Gameplay
Teams alternate throwing turns. On each team's turn, both players throw one ball each (in any order). The throwing line is the edge of the table -- you must stand behind it and throw from behind or above the table edge.
A ball can be thrown in two ways:
- Arc shot: Lob the ball in a high arc so it drops into the cup from above.
- Fastball / line drive: Throw flat and fast so it skips or hits the rim. Riskier but faster.
Balls that bounce off the table or another cup and land in a cup count as a hit (in most rules). The defending team can swat bounced balls away after the first bounce (house rule dependent).
4 Standard Rules
| Rule | Standard |
|---|---|
| Both sink | If both players hit on the same turn, they get the balls back and throw again. |
| Re-rack | Defending team may rearrange their remaining cups into a tighter formation twice per game (typically at 6 cups and 3 cups, or when asked). |
| Bouncing | A ball that bounces off the table counts as 2 cups if it goes in, but can be swatted away after first bounce. Direct throws cannot be swatted. |
| Blowing / fingering | If a ball is spinning in a cup before touching the liquid, some rules allow blowing or fingering it out. Most tournament rules prohibit this. |
| Elbow rule | Your elbow cannot cross the end of the table while throwing. Enforced differently by every group. |
5 Winning
The first team to eliminate all 10 of their opponent's cups wins. However, the losing team gets a rebuttal (also called "redemption"): after the last cup is hit, the losing team gets one final round of throws to try to sink the winning team's remaining cups (usually their last 1 to 3). If they succeed, the game goes to overtime.
Overtime: Each team sets up 3 cups in a triangle. Standard play resumes until one team is eliminated without a successful rebuttal.
6 Common House Rules
- Island (Isolation): Once per game, a player can call "island" on a cup not touching any others. If they sink it, 2 cups are removed. If they miss, it counts as a normal miss.
- Death cup: If a player puts down their unfinished cup and an opponent sinks it, the game ends immediately.
- Naked lap: Losing team runs a lap. Regional tradition, not universal.
- Fire: A player who sinks 3 consecutive cups is "on fire" and keeps throwing until they miss.
- Behind-the-back: If the opposing team catches a ball in the air before it hits anything, the throwing player must make a behind-the-back shot. If sunk, 2 cups are removed.
- No ceilings: Some venues rule that balls hitting the ceiling on the way to a cup are dead.
Pro tip: Agree on all house rules before starting the first game. Rules disputes in the middle of a match are the primary cause of arguments at parties.
7 Shooting Tips
- Arc over speed. A high arc gives the ball a better angle into the cup. Flat throws are fast but less accurate over distance.
- Aim for the back of the cup. The back rim is larger from the throwing angle. Balls that hit the back of the cup rim have higher in-cup deflection than those hitting the front rim.
- Consistent release point. Find a release point that feels natural -- shoulder height, slight forward lean -- and repeat it every throw.
- The bounce strategy. Bounce shots count double in many house rules but can be swatted. Use them when your opponent is distracted or celebrating their last make.
