1 Overview
Flip Cup is a team relay drinking game for 4 to 20+ players. Two teams line up on opposite sides of a table. On "Go," the first player on each team drinks their cup of beer, then places the cup rim-down on the edge of the table and flips it upright with one finger. Once flipped, the next teammate goes. First team to have all players drink and flip wins.
Flip Cup is one of the best large-group party drinking games because it is fast (rounds take 60 to 90 seconds), requires no materials beyond cups and a table, and involves the entire group simultaneously. Unbeatable for parties of 10 to 30 people.
Drink responsibly. Know your limits.
2 Setup
- A long table (8-foot folding table is ideal)
- Solo cups (one per player, plus extras)
- Beer or any beverage
- Split players into two equal teams. Teams stand on opposite sides of the table, facing each other.
- Fill each cup about 1/3 full (roughly 4-5 oz). Equal amounts for both teams.
- Each player places their cup at the edge of the table in front of them.
- Designate a starting end of the table. The first player on each team is at the same end.
3 Gameplay
- The first players on each team make eye contact, tap cups, and say "3, 2, 1, Go!" (or a referee counts down).
- Both players drink their entire cup of beer.
- Place the empty cup right-side-up on the table edge with a small overhang (about 1/4 of the cup hanging off the edge).
- Using only one finger on the top rim, flip the cup so it lands upside-down (rim down) on the table.
- Once the cup lands successfully upside-down, the next teammate starts drinking immediately.
- The relay continues down the line until all players on one team have finished.
4 Winning
The first team to have all players drink and successfully flip their cups wins the round. Most groups play best of 3 or best of 5. Losing teams often drink again as a penalty, though this is a house rule.
5 Flipping Technique
The flip is the skill element. Common beginner mistakes:
- Too much overhang: Too much cup hanging off the edge makes control difficult. About 1/4 overhang is optimal.
- Too hard: A firm flick sends the cup flying off the table. A gentle, controlled motion is faster.
- Flicking from underneath: The most common technique -- place your index finger under the rim and give a quick upward flick. The cup rotates 180 degrees and lands rim-down.
- Wrist motion: Some players prefer tapping the side of the cup with their index finger using a side-wrist motion. Try both and find what works.
- Stay calm: Rushing and getting flustered on a miss causes more misses. Reset, reposition the cup, and flip deliberately.
6 Variants
Survivor Flip Cup
Losers of each round are eliminated one player at a time from each team. Continue until one team is down to one player and they face off 1v1. Extends the game and adds tension to later rounds.
Stack Cup
All players stand in a circle. Two cups start at opposite ends. Players chug and flip; if you flip before the player ahead of you, you can stack your cup on theirs and they drink again. Chaotic and fast.
Boom Cup (Rage Cage)
All players chug and flip. If you land your cup before the player to your right, stack your cup on theirs and they drink a new cup. Last player standing drinks the center "boom cup."
